Háry János is a singspiel in four pictures and a prelude and epilogue by the Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály . The work Az obsitos by János Garay served as a template , the libretto is by Zsolt Harsányi and Béla Paulini. Háry János is subtitled a folk opera and was premiered on October 16, 1926 at the State Opera in Budapest . The Singspiel and the orchestral version of Háry János Suite that was created from it a year later are part of Kodály's main work.
Title of the opera
The opera is played almost exclusively in Hungary and the Cluj-Napoca Hungarian State Opera and is known under the Hungarian name Háry János , where Háry is the surname and János is the first name. Adapted to German usage, the title should be János Háry .

In the tavern of Groß-Abony, the farmers wait impatiently for János Háry, the braggart, who always tells stories about himself and his wonderful experiences and heroic deeds. Finally this appears and immediately begins to fabulous.
First picture
Location: Guard house on the border
Napoleon's second wife, Marie-Louise, the daughter of Emperor Franz, and her entourage are held by Russian guards on the border between Russia and Hungary. János saves them by pushing the booth into imperial territory. Marie-Louise wants to win the courageous hero for the bodyguard and János agrees after a short negotiation. The guard booth is pushed back on Russian soil and the company moves to Vienna.
Second picture
Location: Park of the Vienna Hofburg János serves as a sergeant in the Vienna Castle and does further services. Örzse was not deterred by the resident knight Ehabenin and firmly believed in the loyalty of János, who enjoyed Marie-Luise's attention. Out of anger, the knight Eludin pulls Napoleon's declaration of war on Emperor Franz out of his pocket.
Third picture
Location: Milan Fortress
Stationed near Milan, János is now asked as a warrior by General Krucifix for advice and “Napoleon's Battle” begins, at the end of which Napoleon kneels and begs the invincible János Háry for mercy. Marie-Luise wants to separate from Napoleon in order to take János as a companion. Then Örzse and Marie-Luise get into a quarrel. Her Highness wishes that Örzse return to her homeland and that János Háry be appointed Duke. Örzse cries bitterly until János whispers in her ear that he is going to fix everything.
Fourth picture
Location: Vienna Hofburg
Marie-Luise and her mother prepare for the wedding at the Imperial Court. Örzse arrives at the feast during the favors to say goodbye to János Háry, the groom. He confesses that he only longs for his home country and loves his ex-wife. The emperor is disappointed, but he generously leaves the hero off the rest of his service life.
Aftermath
Back at the Groß-Abony inn. János Háry has finished his exciting stories and the farmers celebrate him, the brave hero.
