Scomberomorus semifasciatus is a Scombride that is native to the north coast of Australia. It is important in commercial fishing, but mainly as a bait fish in recreational fishing. According to the Red List of Endangered Species , it is "not threatened".

description

The first dorsal fin has 13 to 15 hard rays , the second dorsal fin 19 to 22 soft rays . This is followed by eight to ten rafts. The anal fin is like the second dorsal fin from 19 to 22 soft rays, followed by seven to ten Flösseln. The caudal fin is large and deeply split, the pelvic fins very small. Characteristic for this species is the vertical, dark banding in juvenile specimens (hence the synonym " Cybium tigris "), which in adult animals is more pronounced as a speckled pattern. Other special features are the large, upwardly curved pectoral fins and the pointed snout with a slightly elongated upper jaw. The body, the maximum length of which is 120 centimeters, is spindle-shaped or torpedo-shaped. The sideline is straight at first, then it drops down from the second dorsal fin to the middle of the body. There is no swim bladder .

Distribution, habitat and biology

The range of this fish species is limited to the north coast of Australia , the south coast of New Guinea and the southernmost islands of the Malay Archipelago . Scomberomorus semifasciatus prefers coastal waters, reefs and headlands, but is occasionally also found in the open sea. Sometimes the species penetrates into brackish water . It is mainly found at depths over 100 meters. The diet consists mainly of herring-like species .
