Scomberomorus concolor is a predatory fish from the mackerel and tuna families. It is fished both as sport fish and commercially and is considered endangered.
description
Scomberomorus concolor reaches a maximum length of about 77 centimeters. The body is spindle-shaped. The long first dorsal fin consists of 15 to 18 hard rays , of which the fifth is the longest. The second dorsal fin has 16 to 20 soft rays . The approach of the anal fin with 19 to 23 soft rays is opposite that of the second dorsal fin. The caudal fin is large and deeply notched. There are six to nine fleas on the top of the tail stalk and six to eight on the underside. The pelvic fins are very small, the pectoral fins attach to the middle of the body behind the gill covers. There is no swim bladder . As with many Scomberomorus species, the sideline of Scomberomorus concolor is quite irregular. From about the last rays of the first dorsal fin it runs diagonally downwards, from the end of the second dorsal fin on the middle of the body. The backs of the males are steel blue. The flanks of males are simply shiny silver and not patterned as in many other Scomberomorus species, in females they are darker with brownish spots. Juvenile specimens show dark, oval spots on their flanks.
Distribution, habitat and biology
The distribution area of Scomberomorus concolor is limited to the waters around Baja California . Almost nothing is known about the biology of this species. It is a predatory fish that, like all Scombrids, is a fast swimmer. The animals live above the shelf .
