Ronald G. Worton

Ronald Gilbert Worton (born April 2, 1942 in Winnipeg ) is a Canadian geneticist , stem cell researcher and science coordinator.

Life

Worton earned a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Manitoba in 1964 and a master's degree in 1965 . He received his PhD in medical biophysics from the University of Toronto in 1969 . Worton worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University . In 1971 he moved to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto , where he was researcher, laboratory and research director. From 1985 he was head of genetics and a professorship at the University of Toronto . In 1996, Worton went to the Ottawa General Hospital Research Institute in Ottawa as Founding Scientific Director , which in 2001 was merged with the Loeb Health Research Institute in the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI), of which he became the first CEO and Scientific Director. At the same time he became Vice President of the Ottawa Hospital and received professorships in the departments of internal medicine and of biochemistry , microbiology and immunology at the University of Ottawa . Worton retired in 2007.

Act

Worton helped identify, isolate and clone the gene for dystrophin , the mutations of which can cause Duchenne-type and Becker-type muscular dystrophy .

Worton established a center for stem cell and gene therapy at the OHRI . In 1988 he was a founding member of the Canadian Genetic Diseases Network and in 2000 he developed the Canadian Stem Cell Network , an association of outstanding institutions in stem cell research and therapy, of which he was Scientific Director until 2005. Worton was one of the leading figures in the Human Genome Organization .

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) has been awarding the Dr. Ronald G. Worton Researcher in Training Award for promising young researchers.
