Scomberomorus guttatus is a marine fish from the mackerel and tuna families. The animals are fished commercially and are also known as sport fish. To a small extent, frozen products of the species are exported to Europe and America.

description

The spindle-shaped body is built somewhat more compact than that of most other Scomberomorus species. The fish reaches a maximum length of 76 centimeters. The long first dorsal fin consists of 15 to 18 hard rays , the second dorsal fin of 18 to 24 soft rays . The anal fin has 19 to 23 soft rays and is located opposite the second dorsal fin. The large caudal fin is notched in an arc shape. There are seven to ten rafts on the top and bottom of the tail stalk. The pelvic fins are small. The pectoral fins start just behind the gill covers, about the middle of the body. The animal does not have a swim bladder . In contrast to many other Scomberomorus species, this species has a relatively regular lateral line . Along the side line run three irregular, vertical rows of small, brownish spots. The flanks are silver, the back blue.

Distribution, habitat and biology

Scomberomorus guttatus is found in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans . In the Pacific, the species is represented off the coast of China . In Indonesia it occurs only north of the Wallace Line . In the Indian Ocean it inhabits the shelf off South and Southeast Asia and the north coast of the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf . The pelagic predatory fish mainly lives in coastal waters and prefers water depths between 15 and 200 meters. It feeds mainly on small schooling fish such as anchovies , but also on cephalopods and crustaceans , which it hunts in groups.
