Scomberomorus niphonius (Japanese Sawara サ ワ ラ, 鰆) is a marine predator from the mackerel and tuna families. In Japan it is the most important Scomberomorus species from an economic point of view. It is also kept in aquaculture . This species is also popularamong sport fishermen .
description
Scomberomorus niphonius has a long, slender, laterally flattened, spindle-shaped body with a maximum length of one meter. The first dorsal fin consists of 19 to 21 hard rays , the second dorsal fin of 15 to 19 soft rays , followed by seven to nine flippers. Behind the anal fin , which consists of 16 to 20 hard rays, are six to nine flippers. The caudal fin is, typical for Scombrids , quite large and deeply notched. The pelvic fins are small. Behind the gill covers , the pointed pectoral fins start at the level of the middle of the body. The sideline initially runs over the middle of the body, but then drops off from the second dorsal fin. A swim bladder is missing.
Distribution, habitat and biology
Scomberomorus niphonius inhabits the waters around the main Japanese island, the Sea of Japan , Korea and the Yellow Sea . This species prefers coastal waters. As a predatory fish, it feeds on small fish. In the spring the populations of the Sea of Japan undertake spawning migrations, in the fall they migrate for food. A female can lay 550,000 to 870,000 eggs.
