Nematalosa papuensis is a freshwater fish fromthe herring family . It occurs exclusively in the area of ​​the Fly river system in southern New Guinea .

features

The schooling fish reaches a standard length of up to 22 centimeters. The body is silver-colored with an orange or gold gill cover . The dorsal fins are spanned from 13 to 17, the anal fin from 23 to 25, the pectoral fins from 14 to 16 and the ventral fins by 8 fin rays . The rearmost fin ray of the dorsal fin is drawn out long. The number of gill spines is relatively high at 160-520. The head length is about 30% and the body height about 41% of the standard length. The mouth is terminal.

Nematalosa papuensis is considered by some scientists to be the only species of this genus in the fly. Based on the results of unpublished morphological and genetic studies, Nematalosa flyensis Wongratana, 1983, is considered a synonym for Nematalosa papuensis .

Distribution and way of life

Nematalosa papuensis comes in south-central New Guinea before and is there in the Fly - Strickland -Flusssystem including Lake Murray endemic . The fish live in the murky channels of the large rivers, in lakes and oxbow lakes in the lowlands, usually on muddy bottoms. But they have also been sighted in the upper reaches of the Fly (up to 830 km from the mouth upstream) in the Kiunga area.
