economy

The local population catches fish in the lake for their own consumption. There is also a crocodile farm with New Guinea crocodiles .

In 2003 Concord Pacific cleared 100,000 hectares of forest, actually property of the population, along the road from Kiunga to Aiambad . This led to protests from Greenpeace and other organizations. As a result, the Greenpeace Global Forest Rescue Station was set up by Greenpeace Australia Pacific . Forty people from 25 countries worked together with the local Kuni , Begwa and Pari peoples to clarify ownership. The boundary markings serve as protection for the eco-forestry project that has been installed since then. The logging is now being checked, shipped to Australia and sold on behalf of the Forestry Stewardship Council of the locals.

fauna

Leichhardt's saw-ray , which can reach a size of several meters, is very common here . Another eye-catching fish species is the Leichhardt's bone-winging fish, which can grow to a meter tall . Numerous species of birds live on and around the lake.

A cryptid named Murray is also said to live or have lived by the lake. The animal is described as a dinosaur, comparable to the tyrannosaurus .
