The Butte (Bothidae), also called left-eye flounder , live in tropical and temperate areas of the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific .

Buttes feed on bottom-dwelling smaller fish and invertebrates. They spawn pelagically , the eggs float through a drop of oil in the open water. Some species are of great economic importance.

The halibut , which is often mistakenly counted in this family because of its name, belongs to the plaice , the turbot ( Scophthalmus maximus ) and its close relatives to the turbot family (Scophthalmidae).

features

As with the pseudo buttes (Paralichthyidae), dog tongues (Cynoglossidae) and turbot (Scophthalmidae), the left side of the body of most species of the butte becomes the upper side of the flatfish, to which the eyes then move. The dorsal fin begins just above or just behind the eye. The dorsal and anal fin have not grown together with the caudal fin . The pelvic fin attachment on the side of the eye is wider than that on the blind side . The fins do not have hard rays , the rays of the ventral and pectoral fins are not divided. The anus is on the blind side. Most types of butte are very small and only grow to between 6 and 20 centimeters, the largest types reach lengths of 45 centimeters.
