George Brown Goode

George Brown Goode (born February 13, 1851 in New Albany , Indiana , † September 6, 1896 in Washington, DC ) was an American ichthyologist .

Life

George Brown Goode was born in New Albany on February 13, 1851. His mother died after he was one year old. After his father remarried , the family moved to Amenia in 1857 . During his childhood he enjoyed a private education. In 1866 he studied science at Wesleyan University and graduated in 1870. He then went for a short time to Harvard University and studied under Louis Agassiz . He then took over the management of the Museum of Natural History at Wesleyan University and volunteered for the US Commission on Fish and Fisheries .

While working for the US Commission on Fish and Fisheries, he met Spencer Fullerton Baird in 1872 , with whom he developed a deep friendship over time. From 1873 the two worked closely together at the Smithsonian Institution . In 1877 Goode got a full-time position there, first as an assistant and later as a curator. After Baird's death, George Brown Goode took over the management of the institute.

George Brown Goode made few expeditions. He mainly worked as an administrator at various museums. He explored the deep sea on three scientific expeditions and studied chimeras, flatfish and halibut, among other things. In addition to his passion for ichthyology, he was interested in the historical history of science, especially the historical development of science in North America.

He was a founding member of the National Geographic Society on January 13, 1888 . In the same year he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

On September 6, 1896, George Brown Goode died in Washington DC at the age of 45 of pneumonia.

In 1880 the zoologist David Starr Jordan named the genus Goodea from the family of the highland trout (Goodeidae) after him. This is where the family's scientific name comes from.
