Sebastes goodei is a spiny head species that is common on the North American east Pacific coast and can be found in the waters off the Canadian province of British Columbia (such as in Queen Charlotte Sound ) to the Mexican Magdalena Bay on the coast of the state of Baja California Sur .

features

Sebastes goodei is a maximum of 56 cm long. The color varies between a pink shade of red and copper red, the underside is white. The white side line runs in a light red or pink zone. The fins are pink, the soft rayed part of the dorsal fin and the caudal fin are dark. The animals have a total of thirteen dorsal fin spines and a number of 13 to 16 soft dorsal fin rays. The comparatively small anal fin has three spines and 7 to 9 soft rays. The backbone is made up of 26 vertebrae . The top of the head is covered with small spines. The space between the eyes is convex and wide. The lower jaw has a protruding button at its tip, it extends backwards to below the center of the eye.

The species lives in the coastal region, also in brackish water , at depths from the surface area to approx. 425 meters below ground level. Hard rocky grounds are frequented as well as soft sand and muddy soil.

The animals become sexually mature from a length of around 30 centimeters, the maximum body dimensions that can be achieved according to the current state of knowledge are 56 centimeters in length, 1540 grams in weight and at the age of 35 years. The species is viviparous , the larvae are planktonic.

Krill crabs , smaller squids and small fish can be found in the diet .

Economical meaning

The species is fished commercially as well as by sport fishermen; the meat is used for human consumption in a way that is comparable to that of the redfish .
