Sebastes is agenus of fish from the family of the spiny heads (Sebastidae)consistingof over 100 species . The best known species of the genus is the redfish ( Sebastes norvegicus )known as the edible fish.
About two thirds of the Sebastes species occur in the northeastern Pacific off the coast of North America, about 35 species in the northwestern Pacific, two to three off the coasts of Peru and Chile , five in the northern Atlantic and one in the southern Atlantic and southeastern Pacific on the coast of Patagonia .
features
Sebastes species appear harsh and have a stocky, laterally flattened trunk with a large head and mouth. The head is usually provided with bony ridges and spikes. The gill cover is usually equipped with five thorns. Most species are 30 to 60 cm long, the largest reach a length of about one meter. Sebastes species are often reddish or differently colored with colorful stripes and spots. Many species can be distinguished by their color. The hard and soft rayed part of the dorsal fin has grown together. An indentation separates the front section with hard rays from the rear, which is supported by a spike and subsequent soft rays. The caudal fin is rounded, straight or is slightly indented. The pelvic fins are rounded or wedge-shaped.
- Fin formula : dorsal XII-XV / 9–16, anal 3 / 5–9.
Way of life
Sebastes species are predatory fish and occur in rocky areas (English Bez. "Rockfish"), kelp and kelp forests. They have internal fertilization and are viviparous.
