Exilanation is an electronic music project from Bielefeld . The band connects Futurepop with Aggrotech .

Naming

The band name represents an oxymoron through the terms exile and nation , which symbolizes contradictions that are critically discussed in song lyrics (e.g. Antiist) and album titles (e.g. Sunshine in the Daylight). By dividing the word combination into "Exil (e) a Nation", the band name also contains the imperative to decide against a majority.

These and other cryptic external representations, for example through continuous publication times as a number palindrome (e.g. 11.11.11), the backward message in songs and through cipher in track listings, the band was often said to have the background of the conspiracy not only because of their origin ( Bielefeld conspiracy ) .

"Actually, this band doesn't even exist ... At least, according to the conspiracy named after this place, Bielefeld doesn't exist and thus one would actually have to question the presence of the electronics engineers from this phantom town."

- Stefan Surkamp, 2005

history

Initially founded as a solo project, a friendship developed with today's band Rotersand , which resulted in two songs together, in which Exilanation was allowed to contribute additional melodies (additional programming). Both "Merging Oceans" and "Almost Violent" were instant successes in the German Alternative Charts in 2003.

Subsequently, Exilanation placed in the music scene magazine Sonic Seducer "Battle of the Bands", as one of the few bands at all, in the top 3 in all categories.

In 2004 the band received a publishing offer from AMC Alster Musikverlag , as well as a record deal from the Dark Dimensions label .

In 2005, however, it was decided to use its own publishing concept. Exilanation founded Codeline Records, a record label specializing in the use of digital watermarks . The music of the own band, as well as other artists, was henceforth distributed in an exclusive form in order to counter copyright infringements . Without an advertising budget, the debut album sold well into the 4-digit dollar range on digital markets such as ITunes . According to the company, the number of sales units in the sound carrier sector was only moderately successful with a low 3-digit circulation number, but it was possible to increase this significantly through concerts as support for Funker Vogt .

Since 2006, all other publications (including former demos) have been particularly successfully protected and published exclusively using the same principle with audio watermarks. In the years that followed, no new album by the band appeared illegally in file sharing networks .

As an extraordinary novelty, the band released their album "Sunshine in the Daylight" in 2007 with guest singer Danny Marx Young (son of John Paul Young , "love is in the air") and Henrik Iversen (Namnambulu, Sonic Decoy) on USB sticks. Another special feature followed in the next year when a CD under the name "Trilogy" could be put together completely individually by the consumer with all the remixes produced by Exilanation ( audio-on-demand ). The specialty here is not to download a download, but to offer a physical CD. A delivery with a fixed tracklist to other dealers was therefore not possible.

In 2009 the band ended their live activities and can only be seen on stage with guest appearances.
