The album peaked at number 66 on the Billboard charts. The critics were not overly impressed. Steve Huey appreciated the new versions of the already known pieces, but criticized the sometimes violent-sexual youthfulness in pieces such as Fine Girl , Easy Meat or Pick me, I'm Clean . However, Fisher Lowe thinks the album is better than the reviews said, if only because the band is "very likely Zappa's best". The performances by Ed Mann and Vinnie Colaiuta are consistently impressive. Barry Miles criticized the piece Fine Girl for being "an insult to the black population group" and saw Zappa's blatant dislike of the women's movement in the play.
