Sleep Dirt is an instrumental fusion album by Frank Zappa that was released on vinyl in 1979. The album was reissued on CD in 1991, while Zappa had added three pieces ( Flambay , Spider of Destiny and Time Is Money ) with vocal parts that Thana Harris had sung. The texts were originally planned, but were initially not realized and belong to the musical Hunchentoot, which was conceived in 1972 and remained unfinished .

Zappa was in litigation with his record label Warner Brothers while the album was being released. Zappa was therefore unable to influence the form of the publication. He disagreed with the Warner Brothers album title and the cover designed by Gary Panter. Originally the album should have been called Hot Rats III , a reference to his first fusion album Hot Rats and its later follow-up album Waka / Jawaka , which was also referred to as Hot Rats II .
