Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar (Eng. Shut up and play your guitar ) is a rock album by Frank Zappa , which was released on vinyl in 1981 . It consists - with one exception - of guitar solos, most of which Zappa recorded between 1979 and 1980. The album was aimed at guitar-savvy listeners and originally consisted of three separate records, titled Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar , Shut Up' n Play Yer Guitar Some More and Return of the Son of Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar . These were initially sold exclusively by mail order , as demand was expected to be rather low. Because of the unexpectedly great success, the records were given the usual distribution as a triple album a short time later. Zappa shows his skill as a solo player on the album, so there are about four solos from the piece Inca Roads , which were recorded by Zappa within three days, whereby "hardly a lick is repeated". In the last piece, Canard du jour , Zappa improvises in a duet with Jean-Luc Ponty on bouzouki or electric violin.
