Fillmore East - June 1971 is a music album by the Mothers of Invention under the direction of Frank Zappa . It was recorded at a concert at Fillmore East in New York just before the owner closed it. The two lead singers, Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan , who were previously well known with the Turtles, are particularly prominent . There are also several instrumental pieces on the record, some of which had already been released, such as Peaches En Regalia . In addition, there are a few short spoken pieces that are mostly about the sexual experiences of rock band members. For example, one piece is about groupies who are only willing to engage sexually with musicians if they have a hit single. The same line-up can be heard in a joint jam session with John Lennon on his album Some Time in New York City .

In 1990 the album was released on CD on the labels Rykodisc (USA), Zappa Records (Europe) and Vack (Asia). A new edition with a restored cover took place on May 2, 1995 on Rykodisc.

reception

The album received little critical acclaim and received few positive reviews when it was released. Nevertheless, it sold quite well and reached number 38 on the Billboard Charts . Steve Huey sees the album as the beginning of a Zappa tactic, in which Zappa opens up complex music for the audience through "half-evil arena frontman antics" and dirty jokes. The music critic Mike Fish is not very enthusiastic about the album. It is "not much fun" and it sounds like Zappa knows that too.
