Entitled London Symphony Orchestra released Frank Zappa several albums of orchestral music, which in January 1983 under the direction of Kent Nagano from the London Symphony Orchestra was recorded. Zappa had commissioned the orchestra with the recordings after trying in vain for a long time to help his orchestral compositions in the style of New Music to an adequate performance. Initially he published six pieces under the title London Symphony Orchestra Vol. 1 . Four years passed before the second part of the London Symphony Orchestra Vol. 2 was published.
Zappa used a digital multi-track recorder for the recordings , which enabled him to record 24 channels at the same time, and removed the instruments individually or in groups. This procedure was unusual up to then, but it enabled Zappa to be able to carry out a wide range of processing afterwards. Zappa justified the delay until the release of the second album with the fact that he had to use the possibilities of digital technology to correct incorrectly recorded passages note by note during the recording.
