Johann Stoevesandt

Johann Stoevesandt (born September 11, 1848 in Bremen , † January 29, 1933 in Bremen) was a German doctor and hospital director.

biography

Stoevesandt was the son of a merchant. He graduated from the Alte Gymnasium in Bremen and then studied at the University of Tübingen , the University of Halle , the University of Würzburg and the University of Berlin. After graduating, he was a medical officer in the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871. He then received his doctorate as Dr. med. From 1872 to 1874 he worked as an assistant doctor in the Bremen hospital . From 1874 to 1876 he worked in the psychiatric institution . In 1876 he established himself as a specialist in nervous diseases. In 1877 he worked as an internist and neurologist at the private Red Cross Hospital in Bremen . He joined the anti-alcoholic movement and took part in the founding of Heinrich Otto Reddersen's house in Reddersen .

In 1895 he took over the function of directing doctor of internal medicine department at the hospital St. Jürgen Street in Bremen. After this institution was taken over by the city in 1897, he was appointed chief doctor and civil servant director of the internal department. He performed this task until 1920. During his time, some institutes were newly founded and he arranged for the psychiatry to be transferred to an institution in the Ellener Feldmarkt in Osterholz . In 1915 he was appointed professor.

The physician and theologian Karl Stoevesandt (1882–1977) was his son.

Honors

  • He was also involved in the theological field and therefore received an honorary doctorate in theology from the University of Halle in 1920 .
  • The Stoevesandtstraße in Bremen- Sebaldsbrück was named after the doctor's family.
