Peaches en Regalia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peaches en Regalia (from English peach : peach and regalia : regalia, regalia ) is an instrumental composition by Frank Zappa that can be assigned to jazz rock . It was first released on the Hot Rats album in 1969 and has been recorded many times since then. The original version was also released as a single in 1970 with Little Umbrellas as the B-side.

Peaches en Regalia has been described as "one of Zappa's most enduring pieces" and is one of the few tracks by the musician that is occasionally played on the radio in America. It opens up to the listener without great effort and was later taken up again and again by Zappa, for example at many live concerts, but also on the albums Fillmore East, June 1971 (1971), Tinsel Town Rebellion (1981) and two albums by Beat-the-Boots series.

music

Peaches en Regalia was the first track released on Hot Rats . It is a precisely structured and closely executed instrumental piece that looks like an overture . This differs from the following pieces on this album, which leave a lot of room for improvisation. Peaches en Regalia is characterized by piano trills , synthesizer runs and a deep drum sound that is arranged in the center of the stereo image . The piece has an energetic and dynamic effect. It is pompous in a parodistic way, comparable to later titles like Regyptian Strut ( Sleep Dirt , 1979), and when recorded on Hot Rats it benefits from the multi-track tape technology used there, which gives the piece the seamless quality of West Coast jazz can achieve.

In Peaches en Regalia there are many characteristics typical of Zappa's compositions. The theme begins after a two-bar drum intro with four equally long notes from the downward tetrachord of the A major scale (d - c sharp - b - a) described as bright and radiant , which are repeated once. Shortly afterwards, in bars 11–12, a triplet and its augmentation , ie rhythmically enlarged repetition, here one note lower, are strung together. This gives the melodic turn a delay effect. This rhythmic combination is a style characteristic that Zappa likes to use. In bars 15-25 there is a sequence , ie the repetition of a melody sequence on different pitches. Zappa often uses such sequence formations, which are unusual in rock and jazz music.

Impact history

Zappa used the piece on many tours either as an opening piece or as an encore. In a 1980 interview, Zappa described Peaches en Regalia as a classic, “the ultimate general Zappa song of all time”. It's the only piece he's never heard about that anyone wouldn't like it.

Peaches en Regalia was included in the "underground version" of The Real Book , although it is compositionally more complicated than typical jazz standards outlined in the book for jam sessions . The song's inclusion in the book has been described as "the ultimate insider recommendation letter for a jazz composer".

The tune was used as background music on the BBC London radio program by Danny Baker . It was also the theme song for the BBC2 show One man's week in the early 1970s.

A cover version of the piece, recorded by Zappa Plays Zappa with Zappa's son Dweezil Zappa and former Zappa companions Steve Vai and Napoleon Murphy Brock , won a Grammy for best performance of a rock instrumental .
