The redfish or goldfish ( Sebastes norvegicus ; Sebastes marinus ) is a marine fish of the northern Atlantic and a well-known food fish . He was already in 1772 by the Norwegian naturalist Peder Ascanius as Perca norvegica described and comes from Novaya Zemlya , Spitsbergen , the southern Barents Sea , the coast of Norway , including the Skagerrak , around Iceland , on the coasts of southern and eastern Greenland and southern Labrador to to New Jersey .

features

The redfish grows to a meter long, but usually stays at 45 to 50 cm. Fish that live at greater depths grow larger. The maximum weight is 15 kg, the maximum age is 60 years. Its skin is a deep golden red color without any dark markings. The belly is pink or rosy. The rear part of the gill cover is dark. The two lower spines of the gill cover are directed obliquely forwards and downwards. Its dorsal fin is supported by 14 to 16, usually 15 strong spines and 13 to 16, usually 14 to 15 soft rays. In the anal fin there are three spines and 7 to 11, usually 8 to 9 soft rays. The pectoral fins number 18 to 21, usually 19 fin rays .

Way of life

The sociable redfish occurs at water temperatures of 3–7 ° C near the bottom at depths of 100 to a maximum of 1000 m, usually up to 500 m. Young fish live near the coast in fjords and bays. During the summer the fish feed mainly on krill and other luminous crabs, in autumn and winter herring is their main food. Capelin , herrings, luminescent crabs and rib jellyfish are eaten in spring.

Reproduction

Like all Sebastes species, the redfish is viviparous . Mating takes place in the Barents Sea from August to September and in Iceland and Greenland from October to January, when the eggs are not yet mature. The male's sperm are transferred using a short sperm tube. The females initially store the semen. Internal fertilization then takes place from February to March. Then the females migrate to the birthplaces. They are located in the Irminger Sea between Greenland and Iceland, off southwest Iceland, near Newfoundland and over deep regions off the coast of northern Norway. The larvae are born from April to June. A female can give birth to between 50,000 and 350,000 fish larvae 8 mm in length. The fry grow very slowly. They initially live close to the sea surface and only change to life close to the ground at depths of 100 to 200 m when they are 3 to 5 cm in length. They take on the red color when they are 4 to 5 years old and about 15 cm long. They become sexually mature at an age of 10 to 12 years and a length of 30 to 40 cm, the males first.

use

The redfish is caught with bottom trawls during the day, when the schools are near the seabed, and with swimming trawls at night. While the annual catch in the 80s and 90s was below 20,000 tons, its catch quota has increased dramatically since 1999 to 40,000 to 60,000 tons. Almost 80,000 tons were caught in 2000. Since then, the annual catch has been 40,000 to 60,000 tons again. The meat of the redfish can almost always be found processed as a fish fillet - often frozen. It is considered tasty, rich in fat and firm. It is suitable for frying, steaming and smoking .

Recently, the stocks of redfish have been considered severely overfished .
