Sebastes aleutianus is a marine fish from the group of rock perch (Sebastidae), which occurs in the northern Pacific from Japan via the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands along the North American Pacific coast south to San Diego (southern California). Thespecies is absent in the Sea of Okhotsk .

features

Sebastes aleutianus is a maximum of 97 centimeters long. With a proven maximum age of 205 years, Sebastes aleutianus is the fish that can reach the highest age. The color is variable, mostly reddish or blackish-red, often more pink on the belly side and often, especially in juvenile fish, with indistinct, dark spots on the body and fins. The fins often have black edges. In large specimens, the inside of the mouth is white or pink. The dorsal fin is supported by 13 spines and 13 to 15 soft rays. In the anal fin there are three spines and 6 to 8 soft rays. The caudal fin is often slightly indented. The head and gill region are equipped with strong spines. Two to ten spines lie on a ridge below the eyes, which is why the fish was given the common name " Rougheye rockfish ". This spiked comb can be used to distinguish Sebastes aleutianus from the similar Sebastes borealis , which occurs in the same area and has only one or no spine. The similar Sebastes aurora is solid red.

Way of life

Sebastes aleutianus lives at depths of 25 to 2830 meters, mostly between 150 and 450 meters, with cold water temperatures of −0.3 ° to 4.9 ° C near the sea floor around caves, crevices and steeply sloping scree fields. Larger specimens prefer to stay in deeper regions than the smaller ones. It feeds on deep-sea shrimp , hover shrimp , crabs, amphipods and fish.
