The turbot (Scophthalmidae) are a family of flatfish (Pleuronectiformes). All but one species live in the north-eastern Atlantic , the Baltic , the Mediterranean and the Black Sea . Only Scophthalmus aquosus lives in the northwestern Atlantic from Florida to Newfoundland .
features
The eyes are on the left side of the body. The dorsal fin begins above the upper eye, and the bases of the pelvic fins are the same length on both sides. The lateral line organ extends in a large arc over the pectoral fins . Turbot are predatory fish, which for flatfish have a relatively large mouth with a massive lower jaw. The largest species, the turbot ( Psetta maxima ) is a maximum of one meter long. The other species reach lengths of 12 to 75 centimeters.
Turbot are fished commercially.
