The hairbutt ( Zeugopterus punctatus ) is an asymmetrically built flatfish with eyes on the left flank of its body. It can be found in the entire north-east Atlantic from Norway to the Bay of Biscay. As a food fish, it does not play a role.
features
Like all turbot, the hairbutt is strongly flattened on the sides and has a longitudinally oval shape. It reaches a total length of a maximum of 25 centimeters, making it a relatively small flatfish. His eyes are both on the left flank of his body, while his right side (usually) lies on the bottom of the water. The scales on the side of the eyes have thread-like to bristle-shaped attachments, which makes the top surface rough. The fish owes its name to this "hairiness". The lower jaw is tapered and the mouth opening a little overhead.
The basic color of the eye side is yellow-brown with dark spots and smaller spots; in addition, a dark band is often formed over the eyes. The right flank of the body (blind side) is gray, so not as pale as it is common in flatfish. The ventral fin and the anal fin are connected to each other by a fin skin, the dorsal fin is attached to the head in front of the eyes. It has 85 to 102 fin rays, the anal fin 67 to 80 and the pectoral fins 11 to 20 each.
distribution
The hair butt lives on the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean from Norway to the Bay of Biscay as well as on the coasts of the Mediterranean , the North and western Baltic Seas . It lives mainly on cliffs and scree coasts overgrown with algae and seaweed to depths of around 40 meters.
Way of life
The hair butt prey primarily on crustaceans and molluscs on the ground and on the rocks . He can press himself to the bottom and thereby lift the body, creating a negative pressure that sucks the fish to the bottom.
From February to June the female, the Rogner , releases its eggs into the open water. The symmetrically built juvenile fish live pelagic and feed on small crustaceans of the plankton . From a length of three to four centimeters there is a metamorphosis , in which they receive their flatfish shape.
Systematics
The hair butt is one of three species of the genus Zeugopterus within the turbot (Scophthalmidae).
Use and endangerment
In contrast to many other types of flatfish, the hair butt has no significance as an edible fish, which means that it is not fished. In the Red List of the IUCN , this type is not listed.
