Johann Julius Walbaum (born June 30, 1724 in Wolfenbüttel ; † August 21, 1799 in Lübeck ) was a German doctor , naturalist , zoologist and taxonomist . Its biological author's abbreviation is " Walbaum ".

He described many hitherto unknown species from remote areas such as the Great Barracuda ( Sphyraena barracuda ), a number of Pacific salmon species such as chum salmon ( Oncorhynchus keta ), pink salmon ( Oncorhynchus gorbuscha ), sockeye salmon ( Oncorhynchus nerka ), chinook salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha ) and rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ), the convict sea bream ( Archosargus probatocephalus ) of the west Atlantic coast and the Curimata pacu ( Prochilodus marggravii ) from the Rio São Francisco .

In Lübeck he was one of the founders of the still existing society for the promotion of charitable activities .

His daughter Magdalene Juliane (* December 14, 1775; † August 23, 1805) married the Lübeck doctor Nikolaus Heinrich Brehmer , who also wrote him a memorial.

The Natural History Museum in Lübeck ( Museum am Dom ), which opened in 1893, is based on Walbaum's extensive scientific collections (which, however, were lost in World War II).
