The pheasant or peacock's eye butt ( Bothus mancus ) is a species of flatfish from the butte family (Bothidae). It occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the coast of South Africa to Hawaii and Easter Island . In the north the distribution area extends to southern Japan, in the south to Lord Howe Island and in the east to the Revillagigedo Islands , the Clipperton Island and the Isla del Coco . He's missing in the Red Sea .

description

The pheasant butt reaches a maximum length of 51 cm and a maximum weight of 1.8 kg. The side of the eye is patterned with dark, light, bluish spots between which there are numerous scattered, small and dark spots. On the sideline there are usually three additional, particularly dark, large spots. Long rows of widely spaced dark spots appear on the dorsal and anal fins. The pectoral fin on the side of the eye has dark transverse stripes. In the males, the pectoral fin rays are much longer than in the females. Like many flatfish, it can match the color of the top of its body to the subsurface.

Way of life

The pheasant butt lives on sandy soils near the coast and in the sandy zones between coral reefs at depths of 5 to 80 meters. Often the animals also lie on reef roofs . The mostly nocturnal fish, which can occasionally also be seen during the day, feed mainly on smaller fish (88%), as well as crabs and shrimp (12%). In pronounced courtship , the male uses his long upper pectoral fin for signaling, like other fish species (e.g. gobies ) use their dorsal fin. Pheasant butter eggs and larvae are pelagic .
