Rudy Ortiz

Rudy Israel Ortiz Ruiz (born August 6, 1963 in the Baja Verapaz department ; † August 20, 2014 in the Huehuetenango department ) was a Guatemalan major general and, until his death in a helicopter crash, was chief of the general staff of the armed forces of Guatemala (Ejército de Guatemala) .

Life

Ortiz joined the armed forces after attending school and graduated from the Polytechnic School ( Escuela Politécnica ) in 1982 . He then had various posts as an officer and was successively platoon leader and company commander . In addition, he completed military training at the Center for Training and Special Operations (Centro de Adiestramiento y Operaciones Especiales) of the Kaibiles and as a parachutist on the base of parachute troops (Base de Tropas Paracaidistas "General Felipe Cruz") in the Escuintla Department .

After being in command of the Kaibiles for some time , he became an officer of the general staff at the Polytechnic School. In addition, he completed further military training in the fields of infantry, weapons technology, command and general staff at the Center for Military Studies (Centro de Estudios Militares) and intelligence and international law in armed conflicts at the School for Military Intelligence (Escuela de Inteligencia del Estado Mayor de la Defensa Nacional) .

He was then commander of a battalion and successively third and second commander of a brigade , before he was commander of a brigade. In addition to further military training in the areas of international information exchange with the armed forces of Honduras as well as higher national strategy studies at the Supreme Education Command (Comando Superior de Educación del Ejército) , Ortiz also completed numerous civilian courses and acquired a license in technology and resource management at the Galileo University and a degree in law and social sciences from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala . In addition, he took courses in the subjects of free access to public information at administrative authorities as well as public administration and public policy at the National Institute for Public Administration (Instituto Nacional de Administración Pública) and lectures on the challenges of globalization at the Universidad Francisco Marroquín .

Ortiz, who also took a course in higher development policy at the National Defense University of Taiwan , served as Brigadier General (General de Brigada) General Inspector of the Armed Forces (Inspector General del Ejército) . Most recently, he held the rank of Major General (General de División) as Chief of the General Staff (Jefe del Estado Mayor de la Defensa Nacional) and thus held Major General Manuel Augusto López Ambrosio in the military after President Otto Pérez Molina as constitutional supreme commander and Defense Minister Hierarchy.

Ortiz, who has received several awards for his services, was killed with four other officers in a helicopter crash in Huehuetenango Department on the border with Mexico on August 20, 2014 . One of them was Brigadier General Braulio Rene Mayen García , commander of the Mariscal Gregorio Solares Fifth Infantry Brigade stationed in the Huehuetenango department .
