The tongue of lamb ( Arnoglossus laterna ) is a flatfish found in European and African coastal waters. It is found in the north-east Atlantic from Norway to Mauritania and in the Mediterranean.
features
The tongue of lamb, like all buttes, is strongly flattened on the sides and has an elongated and elongated oval, asymmetrically built body. It reaches a total length of no more than 20 centimeters, making it a relatively small flatfish. The eyes are both on the left half of the body, while the fish usually lies with its right side on the bottom of the water. The scales on the side of the eyes are smooth and peel off very easily when touched. There are between 50 and 56 scales along the sidelines .
The basic color of the eye side is gray to brown with irregularly distributed dark spots. The right half of the body ( blind side ) is gray. The dorsal fin already attaches to the head in front of the eyes; its foremost fin rays are often free-standing and not connected by a fin skin. It has 82 to 98 and the anal fin 54 to 74 fin rays.
distribution
The tongue of lamb lives on the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean from Norway to Mauritania , occasionally as far as Angola , as well as in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea . It lives mainly on muddy, sandy and rocky ground at depths of up to 200 meters.
Way of life
The tongue of lamb mainly prey on crabs , molluscs and small bottom fish. The spawning season extends from April to August.
