The Coiliinae are a subfamily of the anchovies (Engraulidae). The fish are found in the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific on the coasts of East Africa, South Asia and Australia .

features

They differ from the second subfamily of anchovies, the Engraulinae , among other things in their long anal fin , which in the Coiliinae has 27 to 81, and in Coilia even 80 to 115 fin rays . The mouth of the Coiliinae is terminal or uppermost . In some species such as Papuengraulis micropinna and Setipinna breviceps , the lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. The Coiliinae are completely scaled, only with some Coilia species the scales in front of the pelvic fins are missing .

Like all anchovies, the Coiliinae are schooling fish that feed on plankton .
