The Airline Training Center Arizona, Inc. (ATCA) is a training company of Lufthansa Flight Training GmbH for flight training for pilots at the airport in Goodyear , a suburb of Phoenix , USA . In 2018, the entire training sector of the Lufthansa Group was restructured and brought together under the new name Lufthansa Aviation Training. Since then, the ATCA trading as Lufthansa Aviation Training USA Inc . Not only Lufthansa has its pilots trained there, but also Bundeswehr pilots start at the ATCA and its branch office there3rd German Air Force Training Squadron their Initial Flight Training (IFT).

The choice of location was made a. also due to the stable weather conditions. The high number of stable sunny days enables visual flight training almost all year round .

Course of training

After the budding pilots at the Pilot School in Bremen have acquired in theory, a basic knowledge in are Goodyear further theoretical and above all practical foundations to acquire the commercial pilot license and Multi-Crew Pilot License and Instrument Flight laid permission. Further training to acquire the respective commercial pilot license takes place in Bremen at the commercial aviation school and later at various simulator locations of Lufthansa Flight Training (including Frankfurt am Main , Munich , Vienna ).

Accommodation and a cafeteria are available to accommodate the young pilots ( NFF ). The ATCA has its own maintenance facility for servicing the 32 aircraft as well as the company's own airfield in Mobile , about 36 km south , where the student pilots practice landing approaches.

Incidents

  • On October 11, 1989, a Beech F33 with the registration number N67536 crashed while taking off in Goodyear after a propeller blade broke due to material fatigue. Due to the imbalance that occurred , the spinner was finally torn off, the plane went into a tailspin and crashed. When the accident was recorded, it was found that the forward view was severely restricted by leaked motor oil. All three inmates were killed in the crash.
  • On August 15, 2001, a Beech F33 crashed with two soldiers on board. The flight instructor and his student died in the accident.
  • On May 22, 2002 a Grob 120A with the registration number N866AF had an accident in Mobile on a technical inspection flight. The pilot died in the crash. The affected machine was delivered disassembled from Germany and was to be subjected to various checks after assembly in the USA; one of these tests involved a quick and deep overflight. Since no technical errors were found on the aircraft and the autopsy did not reveal any previous illnesses that could have led to the accident, the NTSB assumes a pilot error.
  • On February 1, 2006, a Beech F33 with the registration number N1563A crashed near Buckeye . The wreck was found the following night, the student pilot on board was killed in the impact.
