The Central University of Technology , or CUT for short , is a technical university in Bloemfontein in the South African province of Free State . Another campus is located in Welkom .

The Technikon Free State opened in 1981 with 285 students in a former business school. Since 1988, buildings have been continuously purchased and the campus expanded. In 2004 the CUT received university status. 88% of the students are black , the total proportion of women is 49%, 94% of the students come from South Africa.

The CUT is headed by a Vice Chancellor and a principal, the management also includes two Deputy Vice Chancellors, a managing director and an auditor.
