The Walter Sisulu University (English Walter Sisulu University ), WSU for short , is a comprehensive university based in Mthatha in the South African province of Eastern Cape . Its predecessor institutions were the University of Transkei (Unitra) , the Border Technikon and the Eastern Cape Technikon . It is named after Walter Sisulu .

The WSU is headed by a Vice Chancellor. The chancellor has representative and symbolic tasks. The management is responsible to the university council . The university has over 30,000 students and around 1,800 employees.

The university consists of four faculties : it is divided into four campus areas, which are located in Mthatha, East London , Queenstown and Butterworth .

The faculties are divided into schools .

A foundation was created for the university in 2009, which is based in Johannesburg .
