The Telkom Group is a South African telecommunications service provider based in Pretoria . The company offers fixed line , cellular and satellite - based services, with fixed line telephony being the largest business segment. The Telkom Group operates the longest fiber-optic network in South Africa with 147,000 kilometers (as of 2015) as well as several submarine cable connections to Europe and Asia.

Telkom was gradually partially privatized . The South African state is still the largest single shareholder with 11 percent of the shares through its Public Investment Corporation (as of 2017).

In 2007 Africa Online (AFOL), the largest African Internet service provider founded in 1994, became part of the Telkom Group.
