The Telkom Joburg Tower in Johannesburg is a television tower located in the Hillbrow district . With a height of 270 m, it is the tallest structure on the African continent . The tower, originally called JG Strijdom Tower - named after the former South African Prime Minister Johannes Gerhardus Strijdom - and known as the Hillbrow Tower until 2005 , was built between June 1968 and April 1971.

The tower is used for the transmission of radio and television programs as well as for telecommunications for the South African company Telkom . In January 1981 the tower was closed to the public for safety reasons. The tower cage consists of six floors, of which there was a revolving restaurant on the top at 197 m until it was closed .

The last name change took place on May 31, 2005 as part of a solemn ceremony. Since then, the tower has been illuminated in blue in the evening. The city of Johannesburg is carefully trying to revitalize the city center and the neighboring districts.

In Johannesburg there is a second television tower, the Sentech Tower .
