Revolving restaurant
A revolving restaurant is a rotatable restaurant that is moved by means of electric motors via a gearbox . The guests can view the complete 360 ° panorama during their stay without having to leave their seat . Revolving restaurants are mostly located on towers or other tall buildings ( tower restaurant ) or on mountain peaks . On towers they are usually housed in the tower cage . The speed of rotation is usually one to three revolutions per hour.
history
The revolving restaurant in the Florian Tower , a viewing and television tower in Dortmund , went into operation in 1959, making it the oldest in the world. The two-storey revolving restaurant (café and restaurant) opened on the Danube Tower in Vienna in 1964 was the first in which the glass façade rotates with it, thus enabling an unobstructed view without parts of the wall rotating past.
As early as the 1st century AD, a rotating dining room is said to have existed on the Palatine Hill in Rome in the palace Domus Aurea of Emperor Nero . French archaeologists found the remains of a circular building, the rotunda was probably that Suetonius in his imperial biographies had described: "The main dining room was a rotunda that is turned around in a continuous day and night as the universe." ( Suetonius : Vita Neronis XXXI ) The archaeologists suspect that the round building with a diameter of 16 meters contained a wooden frame that was supported by a central pillar.
In April 2017, a child was fatally injured in the revolving restaurant of the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta when it got caught between fixed and moving parts without the system shutting down as intended.
