The Reunion Tower is a 171 meter high observation and restaurant tower . The tower in downtown Dallas in the Reunion District is one of the city's most famous landmarks. The structure is part of the Hyatt Regency hotel complex and is one of the tallest buildings in Texas . The tower was designed just like the hotel building by architect Welton Becket and Associates of Los Angeles .

history

The Reunion Tower was built between 1976 and 1978 as part of a general redesign of the city. The building, which opened on April 15, 1978, originally housed the radio station KOAX-FM (today: KRLD-FM 105.3 FM ). However , it was not used as a transmission tower . At the same time, the hotel complex also redesigned the adjacent Dallas Union Station as a conference building.

Due to extensive renovation measures, the tower was closed to the public from November 16, 2007 to February 9, 2009. The work cost $ 23 million. After the renovation, the Austrian chef Wolfgang Puck opened a gourmet restaurant on February 11, 2009. From October 1, 2012 to October 5, 2013, the observation deck was again closed to the public for maintenance work. The Top o 'Texas Tower observation tower opened in 2013 on the city's exhibition grounds .

description

The geodesic dome as a tower cage

The shaft of the Reunion Tower consists of three parallel columns, which are connected to each other at right angles by a central cylindrical concrete shaft. In addition to the staircase with 837 steps, the middle cylinder also houses rooms with technical equipment. The elevators are housed in the outer pillars. A three-storey, ball-like tower cage is placed on the tip of the shaft and is designed as a geodesic dome with a diameter of 36 meters. The net structure consists of aluminum rods that cross at 260 points. They also carry a lighting unit that lets the tower cage shine in light at night. The digitally controlled LED lighting unit allows different colored light that is used differently depending on the occasion.

The tower cage contains the observation floor on the first floor, a revolving restaurant on the second and a club on the third. The revolving restaurant rotates completely in 55 minutes and offers up to 100 seats. Optionally, the level can be divided into four independent rooms and rented for private events.

reception

The modern landmark of Dallas has been shown in numerous films and series and is on the one hand a distinguishing feature of the city on the other hand as a futuristic symbol. The landmark was shown in the 1980 science fiction film The Lathe of Heaven , which portrayed a society of the future. The tower was also featured in scenes from the 1987 films RoboCop and The Tree of Life 2011. In the 1997 television series Asteroid starring Annabella Sciorra , the Reunion Tower is destroyed by meteorite strikes. In the television series Dallas as well as in its sequel of the same name (→ Dallas, television series from 2012 ), the tower appears as a landmark in the title line.
