The Genex Tower ( Serbian Кула Генекс Kula Geneks ), also known as the West Gate of Belgrade , is a 115 meter high skyscraper in the Serbian capital Belgrade . The building is the second tallest in the city after the Ušće skyscraper. The name Genex goes back to the former state-owned Yugoslav import-export company.

location

The Genex tower is located in the western Belgrade district of Novi Beograd in the Block 33 district, directly on the A1 E 70 / E 75 autoput and about halfway between Nikola Tesla Airport and the city center. Therefore, the Genex Tower is sometimes referred to as the western city gate of Belgrade (Serbian Западна капија Београда / Zapadna Kapija Beograda ). The east gate of Belgrade is its counterpart.

description

Vertical view up to the revolving restaurant

The 35-storey high-rise was designed in 1977 by the architect Mihajlo Mitrović (* 1922) in the brutalist style and was completed by 1980 under his direction. The engineer of the structure was Janko Lisjak. The building consists of two individual parts, each of which has a tubular extension on its narrow side. The two tubes have portholes on their outer sides . The lettering Kommerzbank can be found on a tube . The southern high-rise with 26 floors is used for offices, the northern, with 30 floors, is used as a residential building. Both parts of the building are connected to each other via a skybridge at roof height of the south tower on the 26th floor. A digital clock is attached to the connecting bridge. There are also various neon signs on the facade of the high-rise building. Sometimes the facade of the south tower is completely hung with an advertising banner. The high-rise office building has a mezzanine floor with an exhibition room and storage rooms.

Both skyscrapers consist of a reinforced concrete skeleton and load-bearing walls. The facade is - typical of the architectural style - made of exposed concrete . The floors are divided by twelve centimeter thick false ceilings. Both structures are founded with piles. At the top of the southern skyscraper, at a height of between 135 and 140 meters on the tubular extension, there is a revolving restaurant that rotates around its own axis once an hour. However, in 2013 the revolving restaurant was closed and not open to the public. There are transmitting antennas on the pulpit.

The high-rise with the distinctive lettering of the Zepter company is, among other things, the main object in the music video of the song Network (Falls Like Rain) by the Klangkarussell duo .
