The Sentech Tower , formerly , Brixton Tower and Albert Hertzog Tower called, is a 234-meter high TV tower in reinforced concrete in Johannesburg , South Africa . The tower stands on the edge of the city center on a free hill and belongs to the suburb of Brixton .

In 2001, the broadcasting and IT operating company Sentech, outsourced from the South African Broadcasting Corporation ( South Africa's state broadcaster ), acquired the naming rights to the tower, which led to the current naming.

The Sentech Tower was built between 1958 and 1962 and looks like a replica of the Stuttgart television tower (completed in 1956), the tower baskets of which are almost identical. However, the Sentech Tower has a three- story tower cage with a viewing platform , while the Stuttgart version has four levels and a two-tier viewing platform. The extraordinary similarity of the tower baskets is difficult to recognize, however, as the Sentech name changes the character of the tower significantly.

For safety reasons, the observation deck of the Sentech Tower has been closed to the public since 1982. It was feared that the platform could become the starting point for politically motivated attacks such as the Umkhonto we Sizwe .

In Johannesburg there is a second television tower, the Telkom Joburg Tower , which is also not open to the public.

Johannesburg is now one of the cities with the highest crime rate in the world. Even if no politically motivated attacks are to be expected, the city fathers have so far refrained from reopening the two towers.
