Pretty Yende (born March 6, 1985 in Piet Retief ) is a South African opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Yende studied at the South African College of Music , Opera School, and the University of Cape Town , where he has performed as Fiordiligi , Contessa and Magda in Puccini's La rondine . Yende also studied at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala, Milano. She first attracted international attention in 2009 when she took first place in all categories of the International Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna.

In 2010 she made her European debut in Riga as Micaëla in Bizet's Carmen . In Mantua she sang La musica in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo , in Berlin and Oslo in Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin . This was followed by acclaimed appearances at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan as Berenice in Rossini's L'occasione fa il ladro , as Barbarina , Norina and in 2012 as Musetta . In January 2013. pretty yende debuted with sensational success at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as the Comtesse Adèle in Rossini's Le comte Ory alongside Juan Diego Flórez . Yende was also acclaimed in this role in 2013 at the Theater an der Wien , when she stood in for the sick Cecilia Bartoli . In the 2013/14 season she made her debut as Micaela in Bizet's Carmen at the Los Angeles Opera and as Fiorilla in Rossini's Il turco in Italia at the Hamburg State Opera . In 2014 she returned to the Met as Pamina. In 2015 Yende appeared as Rosina at Den Norske Opera , as Norina at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and as Adina in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore alongside Vittorio Grigolo at the State Opera in the Schiller Theater in Berlin. At the turn of the year she took over the patina at the Grand Théâtre de Genève . In 2016 she made her debut as Rosina at the Opéra National de Paris , as Elvira in Bellini's I puritani at the Zurich Opera and as Amira in the rarely performed opera Ciro in Babilonia at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.

In a concert performance in Cape Town, Yende made her debut in 2013 as Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor , a role that she sang in February 2015 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin alongside Joseph Calleja . She has also given a series of concerts in Bad Kissingen, Düsseldorf, Turin, Riga and the Royal Opera House of Muscat in Oman. In 2014 she made her debut with recitals at New York's Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington. In April 2015 she sang together with the South African tenor Johan Botha at a charity concert for the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital at the Wiener Konzerthaus and in October of the same year an arias and duet program there with Juan Diego Flórez . On the occasion of the South African Human Rights Day , she and her school friend, the tenor Sunnyboy Dladla , gave a gala concert in the Cape Town Opera with works of bel canto on March 21, 2016 . In April 2016 she gave another bel canto evening, this time in Johannesburg with the young tenor Levy Sekgapane .

The announced debuts at the Washington National Opera (as Micaëla) and at the Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam as Contessa di Folleville in Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims have not yet taken place. In the future, she will be seen and heard at the Met in a number of other roles - in the 2016/17 season as Rosina in Barbiere di Siviglia and as Juliette in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette .

Yende lives in Milan and continues to study with Mariella Devia .
