Den Norske Opera & Ballett ( Norwegian Opera & Ballet ), based in Oslo, is Norway's largest music theater and the only Norwegian institution of its kind that exclusively employs professional artists.

The opera is organized as a public limited company , 90% owned by the Norwegian State and 10% by the Norwegian Opera Fund . Two years after the founding of this company, the first performances took place in rented rooms in the Folketeaterbygningen of the former Folketeatret (Volkstheater) in 1959 . The first director of the house was the well-known soprano Kirsten Flagstad between 1958 and 1960 .

The activities of the stock corporation are divided into seven program areas:

  • Opera
  • ballet
  • concert
  • Initial and continuing education
  • Development and creation
  • Touring and Imperial Opera / National Resource and Competence Center
  • Foreign guest performance

A new opera house was opened on April 12, 2008 at the Oslo harbor, see Oslo Opera House .

The Den Norske Opera & Ballet won jointly with the bookmark Salbke the European Prize for Urban Public Space 2010.

In 2015 the opera house received the International Opera Award in the Accessibility category.
