West side, during the inauguration

The Salbke bookmark is a public building in the Salbke district of Magdeburg . In its concept, the bookmark represented a combination of a public bookcase , an event stage and noise protection .

function

The steel structure stands in the so-called Salbker bottleneck and has various freely accessible showcases on its west side. The showcases are filled with books that anyone can take out and read at will. The books are then to be brought back later by the users or replaced by other books. Also BookCrossing is practiced. At the same time there is a covered stage on this western side. The main street Alt Salbke , which is heavily loaded with traffic and a tram route, runs east of the bookmark . The bookmark shields the western area, which is comprised of residential buildings, from traffic and thus creates more pleasant living and living conditions on the western side. In addition, the bookmark is also seen as a symbol for the design and management of structural change in the Salbke district. On the street side there are showcases that are used by local associations for information purposes.

history

The area of the so-called Salbker bottleneck is densely surrounded by residential buildings from the beginning of the 20th century. The houses are relatively close to the street. Since the 1990s, there has been a sharp decline in the use of residential buildings in the Salbker bottleneck. In addition to the general decline in population, this was due to the fact that the industrial companies originally located in the Salbke area ( Fahlberg-List , SKL , Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk Salbke ) no longer exist or no longer exist to the previous extent and thus the need for apartments close to workplaces has decreased. Above all, however, the housing situation near the main street was also less attractive than at other residential locations. Urgent renovations of the houses were therefore not carried out, which further increased the vacancy rate. The original use of the first floor for retail stores in almost all houses has almost completely disappeared. Although the Salbker bottleneck is centrally located in the district, this resulted in a vacancy rate of around 80% and a cityscape characterized by dilapidated buildings.

A central piece of land in the middle of the bottleneck represented an uncultivated fallow area . Following on from a library use that originally existed there , the local citizens' association Salbke, Westerhüsen, Fermersleben e. V. established an open-air library to revitalize the central location with civic engagement. First of all, in a similar cubature to today's bookmark, a temporary building with books was created from beer crates for two days. Due to the high number of book donations, the citizens 'association subsequently set up a citizens' library in a nearby vacant shop on Blumenberger Straße. In October 2007 this permanent library moved into a larger vacant shop on Hauptstrasse. This library of more than 10,000 books still exists today and is also often referred to as a bookmark.

The idea of the permanent establishment of the bookmark was applied within the framework of the ExWoSt research project "Innovation for families and city quarters suitable for the elderly". From 100 applications, the project was selected under the focus "Design of urban open spaces" along with six other model projects for funding and implementation. With the help of subsidies, the city of Magdeburg then built today's bookmark on the fallow land. The project was exhibited at the 11th Venice International Architecture Biennale as one of 20 projects in the German Pavilion. After the building permit had been granted in early 2008 , the foundation stone was laid on December 6, 2008, and the inauguration took place on June 20, 2009. 150 guests attended the inauguration. It gets its characteristic honeycomb structure from the hydrangea tile . The bookmark is operated by the citizens' association and equipped with books. The event stage is used for readings and concerts.

The bookmark Salbke won together with the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet the European Prize for Urban Public Space of 2010. In 2011 the building won the British insurance award 2011th

Ongoing vandalism on elements of the freely accessible structure has proven to be a constant problem in the building . Therefore, as of 2015, there are no more books on site.
