Svend Hansen

Svend Hansen (born March 6, 1962 in Darmstadt ) is a German prehistoric archaeologist .

life and work

Between 1980 and 1988 Svend Hansen studied prehistory, classical archeology , philosophy and religious studies at the Free University of Berlin (FUB). In 1988 he was awarded the Joachim Tiburtius Prize of the State of Berlin for his master’s thesis on metal dumping during the urn field period in the Rhine-Main area . The doctorate at the FU also had a similar topic in 1991 with studies on the metal dumping during the older urn fields between the Rhône Valley and the Carpathian Basin . In 1993, the dissertation was awarded the Eduard Anthes Prize . 1992–1993 Hansen received a travel grant from the Roman-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). In 1994 Hansen became a research assistant at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Heidelberg , and in 1995 research assistant at the Chair for Prehistory and Protohistory of Volker Pingel at the Ruhr University in Bochum (RUB). There he completed his habilitation in 2000 with the thesis investigations into the Neolithic and Copper Age figurative sculpture . The following year he became a university lecturer at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the RUB. In 2003 he became the first director of the Eurasia Department of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin. Since 2004 he has also been an honorary professor at the Free University of Berlin. From 2011 to 2013 Hansen also headed the Roman-Germanic Commission in Frankfurt am Main. From 2009 to 2019 Hansen was involved in the Berlin Cluster of Excellence Topoi. Together with Rüdiger Krause , Hansen was the spokesman for the LOEWE focus “Prehistoric Conflict Research” from 2016 to 2019. In 2019 he received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council for the project Technical and Social Innovations in the Caucasus: between the Eurasian Steppe and the Earliest Cities in the 4th and 3rd millennia BC . Hansen's long-term research excavation in Pietrele ( Măgura Gorgana ), Romania , was awarded the Shanghai Archeology Award in the " Field Discovery " category in 2019 .

From 1996 to 2001 Svend Hansen was the spokesman for the "Bronze Age Working Group" at the German Antiquities Associations , and in 2004 he was a member of the Interdisciplinary Old World Center at the Free University of Berlin. From 2016 to 2020 he was a member of the Expert Committee 101 “Ancient Cultures” of the German Research Foundation .

Hansen has been editor of the magazine “Das Altertum” since 1996. He is on the advisory board of the magazines Dacia (since 2006), Revista Arheologica (since 2007), Studia Antiqua et Archaeologica (since 2009), Talanta. Proceedings of the Dutch Archaeological and Historical Society (since 2009), Stratum plus (since 2010), Archeology, Ethnology and Anthropology of Eurasia - Archeologija, Etnografia i Antropologija Evrasii (since 2014), Archaeologia Austriaca (since 2014), Vestnik novosibirskogo gosudarstvennogo Universiteta . Hansen has been a Scientific Advisory Board member of the Saxon State Museum for Archeology since 2007 .

Hansen has been a full member of the DAI since 2003; in 2014 he was in Tbilisi , the honorary doctorate of the Sokhumi State University awarded. In 2016 he was awarded honorary membership of the Archaeological Institute in Iași . He has also been an honorary member of the Romanian Academy since 2016 .

Hansen researches in particular the Neolithic and the Bronze Age . He carried out excavations in Aruchlo in Georgia , Pietrele ( Măgura Gorgana ) in Romania and Ergeninsky in Russia . He researched the Neolithic statuettes of Aşağı Pınar in Turkey and Bronze Age depot finds .
