Kırklareli ( Greek Σαράντα Εκκλησιές Saranta Ekklesies , Bulgarian Лозенград Lozengrad ) is a Turkish city ​​and capital of the province of the same name near the border with Bulgaria . At the same time, it is also the center of the surrounding central district ( Merkez ). It is located in the Eastern Thrace region and until 1924 was called Kırkkilise (also written Kirk Kilisse , to German "Forty Churches").

The district borders on Demirköy County in the east, Pınarhisar County in the south-east, Babaeski County in the south, three counties in Edirne Province in the west and Kofçaz County in the north .

History and sights in the city

The region around Kırklareli was already settled in prehistoric times . The Archaeological Institute of the University of İstanbul has been excavating two prehistoric settlements since 1993 together with the German Archaeological Institute and since 2008 also with the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . The Neolithic Tell Aşağı Pınar dates to a period between approx. 6100 and 4800 BC. BC, the Bronze Age settlement Kanlıgeçit, however, in the third millennium BC.
