Kırklareli ( Greek Σαράντα Εκκλησιές Saranta Ekklesies , Bulgarian Лозенград Lozengrad ) is a Turkish city and capital of the province of the same name near the border with Bulgaria . At the same time, it is also the center of the surrounding central district ( Merkez ). It is located in the Eastern Thrace region and until 1924 was called Kırkkilise (also written Kirk Kilisse , to German "Forty Churches").

The district is the largest in the province, but has only the second highest population after Lüleburgaz . Its population density is above the provincial average (56 inhabitants per km²). The district borders on Demirköy County in the east, Pınarhisar County in the south-east, Babaeski County in the south, three counties in Edirne Province in the west and Kofçaz County in the north .

In addition to the district town, the district consists of three other Belediye (municipalities): İnece (1,858), Kavaklı (4,714) and Üsküp (2,189 inhabitants) as well as 40 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 376 inhabitants. Five of them have more than 500 inhabitants: Karakoç (3,340 inh. , Also the largest village in the province), Kızılcıkdere (1,144), Kayalı (760), Dolhan (688) and Dereköy Bucak Merkezi (532 inh .).

History and sights in the city
The region around Kırklareli was already settled in prehistoric times . The Archaeological Institute of the University of İstanbul has been excavating two prehistoric settlements since 1993 together with the German Archaeological Institute and since 2008 also with the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . The Neolithic Tell Aşağı Pınar dates to a period between approx. 6100 and 4800 BC. BC, the Bronze Age settlement Kanlıgeçit, however, in the third millennium BC. Furthermore, various Iron Age burial mounds are known from the area . Numerous finds are exhibited in the small History Museum of the Kırklareli Province.
The Hızır Bey Mosque , the oldest in the provincial capital Kırklareli, was built in 1388. Under Hızır Bey , an Ottoman officer , an ensemble of hammam (bath house) and Besistan (covered bazaar) was built next to the mosque . The Kirklar Monument (Kirklar Turkish for The Forty) from the 14th century , an impressive structure consisting of 18 columns, stands on the same hill in memory of 40 Janissaries who during the conquest of the area in 1368 under Sultan Murat I. have fallen should.
In the First Balkan War , the city was captured by the Bulgarian 1st Army at the Battle of Kırklareli on October 24 , but was recaptured by the Ottoman troops in the Second Balkan War on July 21, 1913. As a result, the Bulgarian population was expelled or murdered (→ Thracian Bulgarians ). Some of the displaced settled in Sozopol and other places in the Burgas region.
The Yayla mahallesi , a high-altitude district that has largely remained in the state of construction of the 19th century, is particularly worth seeing .
In the city center there is a small museum with natural history and archaeological exhibits. On the south-eastern outskirts of the city, next to the excavation area of Aşağı Pınar, an exhibition on the results of the archaeological excavations and the prehistory and early history of the surrounding area was set up in summer 2008.

In Kırklareli the trunk roads D555 (European route E87) and the D020 intersect. The city is also the starting point of a railway line.
Schools and University
In addition to general education schools, the Kırklareli Fen Lisesi science high school has existed since 2002. The Kirklareli University was founded in 2007 as a spin-off from the Trakya University Edirne , with Enver Duran as the founding rector .
