Vize ( Greek Βιζύη-Bizye ) is a town and capital of the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Kırklareli in Eastern Thrace . The place is located about 50 km southeast of the provincial capital Kırklareli on the D020 trunk road. Vize is known for the Byzantine church Hagia Sophia , which was probably built in the 8th or 9th century.

geography

The district is located in the east of the province on the Black Sea coast and is bordered by the Demirköy district in the north, the Pınarhisar and Lüleburgaz districts in the west and the Saray district of the Tekirdağ province in the south . The population density (25.8) is below half the provincial average (55.9 inh. Per km²). Almost half of the district's population lives in the district town. In addition to the district town, the district consists of two other Belediye (municipalities): Çakıllı (2,017) and Kıyıköy (2,180 inhabitants). Furthermore, 24 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 414 residents belong to the district. Sergen (1,200), Evrenli (899), Evrencik (623), Kışlacık (621), Hasbuğa (559) and Kızılağaç (551) have over 500 inhabitants, the remaining 18 villages have fewer.

history

Little is known about the early history of the probably Thracian site. Since Hellenistic times it was believed to have been the capital of Thracia , an independent Thracian kingdom. It was made in 46 BC. Integrated into the Roman Empire as a province. In Byzantine times there was a small fortress in the immediate hinterland of Constantinople. A water pipe supplied the capital from here. Shortly after 1200, Bizye was conquered by the Crusaders and finally conquered by the Ottomans in 1453. In the 16th century, Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque and then profaned in the 1970s .

In August 1903 the city was taken during the Ilinden-Preobraschenie uprising by Bulgarian insurgents led by Stamat Ikonomov .

The German Archaeological Institute is currently carrying out a construction survey and preparatory safety measures at the Hagia Sophia in order to enable the Byzantine church to be permanently renovated.
