Andreas Külzer (historian)

Andreas Külzer (born December 29, 1962 in Leverkusen ) is a German Byzantinist and historical geographer .

Life

Külzer studied at the University of Cologne first legal history , then Byzantine, Ancient, Medieval and Modern History. He completed his Magister Artium in 1990 and received his doctorate in 1993. From 1994 to 1997 he was a research fellow from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the German Research Foundation . Since 1997 he has been a research assistant at the Austrian Academy of Sciences , Vienna. Between 1997 and 2005 he worked in the commission for the Tabula Imperii Byzantini , since 2006 at the newly founded Institute for Byzantium Research. In February 1999 he received his habilitation at the University of Cologne , and in March 2007 he was appointed adjunct professor for Byzantine Studies there.

He gives courses at the Universities of Cologne and Vienna ; In 2002 he was visiting professor at the Central European University in Budapest. Külzer is a board member of the Austrian Byzantine Society.

His publications deal primarily with questions of the historical geography of the Byzantine area as well as with the Byzantine historiography , culture and mentality history .
