Joseph Calleja (born January 22, 1978 in Attard , Malta ) is a Maltese opera singer ( tenor ).

biography

Joseph Calleja began singing at the age of 16 when he was discovered by tenor Brian Cefai. His teacher was the Maltese tenor Paul Asciak. He made his debut in Malta in 1997 as Macduff in Macbeth ; in the same year he won the Belvedere Hans Gabor Competition, the Caruso Competition in Milan in 1998 and the CulturArte Prize at the Domingos Operalia Competition in 1999 .

In 2000 he made his Toronto debut as Rodolfo in La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini . In the fall of 2009, Calleja sang the role of Hoffmann in Jacques Offenbach's opera Les contes d' Hoffmann at the Metropolitan Opera in New York after Rolando Villazón had canceled due to his vocal crisis. During the 2010/2011 season, Calleja took on three roles at the Metropolitan Opera: Rodolfo in La Bohème , Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti alongside the soprano Natalie Dessay and the Duke of Mantua in Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto .

On his Covent Garden debut in London he sang the Duke of Mantua and there also Alfredo in La traviata and Macduff in Macbeth , as well as Nicias in Jules Massenet's Thaïs in a concert performance.

In other concert performances he took on the role of Tebaldo in Vincenzo Bellini's I Capuleti ei Montecchi at the Vienna Konzerthaus together with Anna Netrebko ( soprano ) and Elīna Garanča ( mezzo-soprano ), which was recorded by Deutsche Grammophon and published in early 2009.

As a concert singer, Calleja has undertaken several tours through Germany with recitals and solo evenings as well as joint appearances with the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko. He has also performed at opera galas in Leipzig , Hampton Court and the Faenol Festival in Great Britain with the Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel . In 2012 he designed parts of the Last Night of the Proms .

On October 8, 2015, Calleja was elected to the board of the European Music Theater Academy .
