I Capuleti ei Montecchi (The Capulets and the Montagues) is an opera seria (original name: "tragedia lirica") in two acts (four parts) by Vincenzo Bellini . The libretto was written by Felice Romani on the basis of various Italian sources, including Matteo Bandello's novella La sfortunata morte di due infelicissimi amanti ( The tragic death of two unhappy lovers ), which was also used by William Shakespeare for his drama Romeo and Juliet . Shakespeare's play, on the other hand, was almost entirely unknown in Italy at the time. The premiere took place in 1830 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice . The opera is set in Verona in the 13th century.

For I Capuleti ei Montecchi, Bellini reused several pieces with new texts from his opera Zaira, which failed at the premiere in 1829 . The romance of Giulietta Oh quante volte is based on the aria of Nelly Dopo l'oscuro nembo from Bellini's first opera Adelson e Salvini .
