Adelson e Salvini (Adelson and Salvini) is an opera semiseria in two acts by Vincenzo Bellini . The libretto wrote Andrea Leone Tottola . It is based on the novella Épreuves du Sentiment by François-Thomas-Marie de Baculard d'Arnaud , which, unlike the opera, ends tragically. The first performance took place on February 12, 1825 in the Conservatory "San Pietro a Majella" in Naples .
action
The plot of the opera contains a number of entanglements, misunderstandings, attempts at deception and intrigues, but also has humorous scenes. Essentially, the piece is about the painter Salvini, who secretly and passionately adores Nelly, the fiancée of his Irish patron and friend Lord Adelson, but who is secretly loved by Fanny, his painting student. Nelly is said to be kidnapped with the help of Struley, an adversary of Adelson's. When suddenly a gunshot can be heard, Salvini believes she was killed. After discovering that Nelly is still alive, he abandons suicide, but is healed of his infatuation with her and instead becomes engaged to Fanny, while Adelson and Nelly get married.
Emergence
The work was Bellini's first opera. He composed it at the age of 23. When it was first performed on February 12, 1825 at the “San Pietro a Majella” Conservatory in Naples , it was played in three acts. The opera was extremely popular with students at the Conservatory , so it was played every Sunday for a year. Also Gaetano Donizetti praised the work. In 1827 the opera was reworked into a two-act version.
