Giuditta Grisi

Giuditta Grisi (born July 28, 1805 in Milan , † May 1, 1840 in Robecco d'Oglio ) was an Italian opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ).

Life

Giuditta was the daughter of Gaetano Grisi, an officer in the Napoleonic army, and Giovanna Grassini. She came from a family of musicians. Her mother, her aunt Giuseppina Grassini (1773-1850), her sister Giulia Grisi and her cousin Ernesta were also singers. Giuditta is said to have had a somewhat difficult character and did not get along very well with the equally successful Giulia, while she was on stage a few times with Ernesta, who only had a modest career. Her cousin Carlotta Grisi was one of the most important ballerinas of the Romantic era.

Like her sister Giulia, Giuditta was educated at the Conservatory in Milan . She made her debut at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna in 1824 in the trouser role of Falliero in Gioachino Rossini's Bianca e Falliero . A year later she sang the same role in Naples at the Teatro San Carlo , where she also appeared in other Rossini operas, as Arsace in Semiramide , alongside Joséphine Fodor and Luigi Lablache , and as Malcolm in La donna del lago .

In the following years she was at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence, at the Teatro Regio in Parma , at the Teatro d'Angennes in Turin and at the Teatro del Giglio in Lucca . She appeared again mainly in operas by Rossini, in L'assedio di Corinto , Mosè , Otello and Cenerentola , also in Giovanni Pacini's Gli Arabi nelle Gallie and in works by Mercadante , Persiani and Generali .

From 1829–30 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice , Giuditta worked for the first time with Vincenzo Bellini , who was enthusiastic about her and wrote for her the part of Romeo in his then very successful opera I Capuleti ei Montecchi .

In this role she made her debut on December 26, 1830 at La Scala in Milan , where she a. a. also appeared in operas by Rossini, Pacini and Donizetti. In Venice in 1832 she sang the title role in Donizetti's Anna Bolena and the Alaide in Bellini's La straniera , as well as in Pacini's L'ultimo giorno di Pompei .

Giuditta Grisi was an ideal interpreter of the romantic repertoire in terms of her temperament; in contemporary reviews her voice is described as "beautiful and powerful", her playing as "energetic" ( bella e poderosa voce ed energica azione ), and her singing as "animated and full of truth ”( canto pieno di anima e verità ).

In 1832 she went on tour to London and the Théâtre-Italien in Paris , where she celebrated brilliant successes in operas by Bellini and Rossini.

Back in Italy, she sang the title role in Bellini's Norma in Bologna in November 1833 . These and other roles composed for a so-called soprano sfogato , such as For example, the Imogene in Il pirata , Elvira in I Puritani , or Antonina in Donizetti's Belisario , had to be transposed a third down for Giuditta Grisi , because otherwise she would not have maintained the higher degree with her mezzo-soprano.

On March 18, 1834 she married Count Cristoforo Barni from Lodi , and then followed an engagement in Madrid , where she sang in Bellini's Norma and I Capuleti . In the following years her career took her to Venice, Turin, Bologna, Mantua , Trieste and Bergamo , including appearances as Amina in La sonnambula .

She experienced the end of her career in Rome , where she sang for Grand Duke Alexander of Russia and in June 1839 appeared again in her brilliant role as Romeo in I Capuleti ei Montecchi at the Teatro Argentina . After a serious illness, she retired to her villa in Robecco d'Oglio near Cremona , where she died on May 1, 1840, of the consequences of a abducted abdominal ailment (?).
