The Real Teatro di San Carlo is the largest opera house in Naples , Italy . The historic house was for years the largest and one of the most respected operas in Europe.

history

The Teatro San Carlo was designed and built in 1735 by the architects Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale for the Bourbon king Charles VII of Naples . The king wanted to equip Naples with a new and larger theater in place of the old decaying Teatro San Bartolomeo from 1621. For years, the Teatro di San Carlo was the largest opera house with 3,300 seats and, even before the La Scala in Milan , the most prestigious house in Europe and the world, and was admired for its architecture and rich furnishings alone. But also through the numerous world premieres of Gioachino Rossini (9 operas, including Otello , Armida , Mosè in Egitto ), Gaetano Donizetti (17 operas, including Lucia di Lammermoor ), Giovanni Pacini (17 operas, including L'ultimo giorno di Pompei and Saffo ), Vincenzo Bellini ( Bianca e Fernando 1826), u. v. a. the Teatro San Carlo was popular with the public. Great tenors like Franco Corelli , Galliano Masini , Mario del Monaco , Beniamino Gigli and of course Enrico Caruso were among the artists of this house.

The theater opened on November 4, 1737 - the king's name day - with the performance of Domenico Sarros Achille in Sciro , who himself conducted his work on the occasion. This opera was based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio .

In February 1816 a fire destroyed large parts of the theater. The architect Antonio Niccolini was responsible for the repair and restoration . At the end of August of the same year, Niccolini was able to re-open the theater to the public - with classical modernization. The opera Medea in Corinto by the German composer Johann Simon Mayr was premiered here on November 28, 1813 . Mayr's pupil Gaetano Donizetti experienced the premiere of his opera Lucia di Lammermoor here on September 26, 1835 . In March 1904 Siberia by Umberto Giordano listed as Italian premiere.
